Points of Bonsai Appreciation

Branches and leaves:
The shapes of ichi no eda (the lowest branch) and ni no eda (the branch just above ichi no eda) are especially important. The distribution of tiny leaves that have been carefully trimmed should also be appreciated.

Roots:
Roots should grow solidly, spreading in all direction as they do in nature (happo nehari).

The trunk should be in proper size and shape, keeping good balance with the shape of the whole tree, and the bark should look moderately aged.

Surroundings:
in bonsai, to create surroundings that make the tree look aged is as important as shaping the tree. Measures such as planting moss on the soil or using old pots are teken.
